The Versatile Blogger Award

YAY! :)
Versatile: ver-sa-tile [vur-suh-tl] or, especially British, [vur-suh-tahyl]: capable of, or adapted for, turning easily from one to another various tasks, fields of endeavor, etc.: a versatile writer.

Word information source: www.dictionary.com

Here is how the award works:

1. You thank the person who presented you with the award.

2. You tell 7 things about yourself.

3. You award 15 other newly discovered bloggers.

I want to thank Kelli from KelliBelliBand for nominating me for this award. I have been following her for a while and she's also helped get some traffic to my blog.  So DOUBLE THANK YOU KELLI!  If you haven't checked her out yet, please do!  I've enjoyed following her journey.  :)

7 things about me:

1.  I'm happily married, a step-mom to two young men (Mike is 15, Gavin is 9), and a mother to 3 fur babies; Owen's a Maltipoo and is 5, Dixie is a Boxer and is about to be 3, and Olive is a charcoal grey cat and is about 1 1/2.  My hubby and I were trying to conceive when I decided to have lapband surgery so it's been put on hold for a while but I can't wait for the day I have children.
2.  I absolutely adore the elderly, seriously, they make my heart smile.  I love to talk to them and hear all the stories of their lives.  I used to visit nursing homes just because I loved to spend time with them.
3.  I am fascinated with bad weather and would love to ride with tornado chasers (no joke).
4.  I cannot stand the sound of a ticking clock.
5.  I just recently quit biting my nails and I'm almost 30.
6.  I'm still not 100% sure what I want to do with my life.  I already have my Bachelors degree, but if I didn't have to work full time I'd probably go back to school to become a nurse.
7.  I love love love love music, I often break out in song (like Jess, in New Girl...yup, that's me! lol) and I love to dance!

Okay so I'm not sure I even know 15 active bloggers since I'm still getting the hang of all this but I'll try...here goes!

Banded Cupcake at Banded Cupcake
Barbie at RockBandBarbie
Robyn at robyn's Nest
LapBand Gal at Lap Band Gal
Jackie at Jazzin Up Jackie

Okay, I've gone through my list and nominated some excellent bloggers.  I know it's not 15 but I think this'll do.  If I missed you, I'm so sorry :(   I think everyone rocks!

By the way...does anyone know why my Blog List randomly disappears??

Chicken Soup for the Soul

I used to love those books, didn't you?

So it's Sunday and I'm feelin' a little better.  I'm still very sore but I'm findin' it easier to get up and down and I'm still walkin' around which helps so much.  Mom was here this weekend takin' care of me (Thanks, MOM!) while the hubby worked.  I'm so thankful she was here; hubby's good around the house and all but Moms are SO much better, aren't they?  She did our laundry, did dishes, cooked dinner for her and hubby, and made me a big pot o' Chicken Soup.  Ahhhh.  Readin' other people's blogs and what they had week 1, I NEVER understood how you could actually enjoy just plain ole' chicken broth.  But I craved it all weekend!  Just something homey, savory, warm, and almost meal like sounded so wonderful to me.  And it was.  :)  Of course, I didn't have the whole soup.  Once it was finished, we took the chicken and veggies out, de-boned and shredded the chicken, put the chicken and veggies in sealed containers, and froze it for my week 3 when I can have soft chicken and veggies.  We also divided the chicken broth into containers, poured me a hot steamy glass, put one container in the fridge, and the rest in the freezer.

IT.WAS.DIVINE.  :)

Mama's Chicken Broth
She used:
1 whole chicken
Carrots (use any veggies you want!)
Celery
Onion
Bell Pepper
Salt & Pepper
Mrs's Dash Garlic and Herb Salt Free Seasoning

Put all in a big bowl, boiled it together until the chicken was fully cooked.

Don't forget to skim the top to remove the fat.  Once the broth cools the fat separates to the top  and it'll be easier to remove the fat.

Hope you enjoy.  :)

Week 1 Post Op Essentials

Good day folks!  Day 2 (I say day 2 because I didn't get home until 7pm on surgery day) post op and things are going well.  I'm still in quite a bit of pain, but as I've said before the pain meds are really helpful.  I also had a very large hiatal hernia that was repaired at the same time so I'm assuming that's adding to the pain I'm experiencing.  I'm very eager to get up and walk around quite a bit because it does help me feel better.  I really don't have much gas pains anymore so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.  Maybe it's all the walkin' I'm doin'?

For those of you that haven't had surgery yet, or are currently in your post op...this post is for you!  Leading up to my surgery, I found the blogs or sites I found that listed the things they enjoyed while in Week 1, and following weeks, very helpful as I prepared.  I also know that things can get boring just drinkin' all your meals, so hopefully someone will find my ideas helpful. Please keep in mind that I am following this according to my doc's orders.

As everyone knows, you need protein, at least 60 grams a day.  For me, this is thin liquids week and I can't use milk so I'm not using my Ninja blender to make my shakes, I'm using my hand blender.  Even though I'm not having any trouble getting anything down, I still don't want to risk anything thick by blending ice.

Hazelnut Iced Latte
1 scoop of Vanilla Body Fortress Protein powder
1 packet of Nestle Taster's Choice Hazelnut instant coffee
1 packet of Stevia (optional)
about 1/2 cup - 1 cup of water (to your preference, I used 1/2 cup)

Mix with hand blender and pour over ice.  (I did the same thing with my green tea frap, just subbed the soy milk with water and poured over ice)

Nutritional facts:
Calories 140g
Protein  26g
Sugars  1g

A few other things that are getting me through my day:
  • Sugar Free Popsicles
  • Hot Tea - I've never been a hot tea drinker until Pre-op and now I'm hooked, it really helps sooth my sore tummy  :).  I have Chai and Green tea and then at night I drink Chamomile
  • Water - I fill up a big 32 oz cup and sip on this all day, I try my hardest to drink two of them.
  • Crystal Light - I have tons of flavors, Raspberry Ice is my fav
  • Sugar Free Jello
  • Flinstones Gummie vitamins, Immunity Support (2/day)
  • Chewable Gas X
  • Tylenol Cold and Sinus - as I mentioned before, the liquid hydrocodone keeps my mind goin' and does NOT help me sleep, so the nurse told me this was a good alternative for night.  I slept like a baby.  :)
  • EAS AdvantEDGE protein shakes - I like these so much better than Muscle Milk and I like to have different shakes so I make my own and I drink these.  I LOVE the Dark Chocolate and Strawberry Cream.
  • Chicken Broth - mama's here and making this for me tonight so I'll post this recipe tomorrow :)
I hope this helps someone!

Surgery Day Story

Hello everyone!  I am now in Bandland! I didn't get to post my story yesterday because my day did NOT go according to plan.  But the surgery itself wasn't bad at all.  I arrived at the hospital (True Results, Houston, TX) at 9:45am, as I was told to get there by 10am.  I wasn't told a definite time but I assumed that my surgery was scheduled for about 11:30 to 12ish.  At about 11:30am, the nurse came out and told me that the surgeon was behind...real behind.  The patient two people ahead of me had some sort of obstruction that was going to require extra attention, in addition to band and the hernia repair they were expecting.  Then once he was done, there were two people ahead of me that would be at least 45 min each...great...sigh.  At least they had an effin' TV in the waitin' room.  At first I was pretty pissed off, I mean, I was nervous as hell, and I had at least 2 more hours to be nervous, and I'd already been there for 2 hours waiting....ugh!  But then I though about it, surgery is no light matter and a patient's life is in the surgeon's hands.  This patient needed extra attention and if it was me, I would not want anyone to be rushed.  So I got out my iPod, listened to music, watched tv, and read magazines.  I was sitting next to the family of this patient so I listened as the surgeon explained everything to them.  He had a lot wrong going on in there and the surgeon had to 'manipulate' the intestines due to this obstruction which is what took such a long time.

Not too long after that, the nurse came and got me to start prepping me.   I had to pee to make sure I wasn't pregnant, then the nurse gave me my change of clothes and I crawled into the bed.  I got my heperin shot to thin my blood, which I had heard horror stories of this shot, but its not so bad.  Once I got my heperin shot the nurse put on my hot green leg thingys that massage my calves while in surgery and hooked me up to iv, which he told me was like Gatorade but without all the sugar.  This was wonderful, because I hadn't had anything to eat or drink since midnight and it was already about 2PM and I.WAS.THIRSTY!  I'm a big water drinker so I'm pretty much always thirsty for it.  So anyway, once I had my iv and my hubby was able to come back and sit with me, I was no longer nervous and ready to get this show on the road.  We sat and chatted and he loved on me (nothing inappropriate but playing with my hair and holdin' my hand, stuff like that plus I think he was real nervous ).  Here's a pic he took of me in Prep:
I got to meet all the nurses and then at about 3PM they said I was ready.  This is when I saw the anesthesiologist shoot me up with the 'cocktail' and they started rolling me down the hall.  This was the good stuff.  I felt like I was on a roller coaster!  I went 'Whoooooo' down the hall and all the nurses started laughin' LOL.  I got  to the operating room, they moved me over to the table, put the oxygen mask on me, told me to take 3 deep breathes and I.WAS.OUT.

What seemed to be about 5 minutes later, I woke up in recovery.  The only pain I felt was the shoulder pain from the gas, which is still the weirdest thing to me.  I think the nurse gave me a shot of something, demoral maybe while I was in recovery, but I don't remember too much.  Then she made me get up and walk around and I got to meet up with my hubby.  This part is all kinna hazy so I'm sorry if I'm rambling.  Once they were ready for my barium swallow and xray, I did that and they told me as long as I could pee, I could go home.   Thank Gawd!  I was so ready to be out of that place and I have such a small bladder I knew that'd be no problem, plus I felt I needed to pee pretty bad.  So I had to pee into this bowl that goes inside the toilet so they can make sure I'm peeing well.  And it just dripped out....very slowly...lol.  Fortunately, it was good enough and they released me.  Unfortunately, it was about 5:30, and I was near downtown Houston, so that meant we'd still get into 5 o'clock Houston traffic...great.  For everyone that I've read say 'I felt every bump', well now I know what you meant.  And it was weird bc I could feel my insides movin' around on the bumps and that was not so good.  In addition to that, by now my bladder was churnin' out pee!  Seriously, we stopped four times and every time it was this little drip of pee, I'd feel 100% better and then 10 minutes later I had to go again, and there was no me holdin' it.  Along the way, I even had to get a cup (the one I had my tea in) and let my pee drip in that while we were on the road, in traffic and there was no findin' a place to stop.  LOL, TMI, sorry but it's the truth.  :)  Once I got home, got my meds, a Popsicle, and hubby got my chair all ready for me, I was happy.   I drank some water, had some more hot tea, and watched tv until about 11.

The meds, liquid Hydrocodone, does not knock me out, it makes my mind race so I really didn't sleep well last night. I attempted to sleep in my recliner because I've heard that is the best place but I was real uncomfortable, so I eventually moved to my bed and finally fell asleep.  I woke up again at about 4am and took some more meds and watched an episode of  I love Lucy (I love that show!), then fell back asleep until about 9am this morning.  I'm still real sore and am in quite a bit of pain but the meds are helping and walkin' works wonders!  Gas pains come and go but I'm takin' chewable gas x for pains.

So that's my Surgery Day Story, I've really enjoyed reading everyone else's and I'm very happy to be able to add my own.  :)

Thank yous and Mochaccinnos!

Good evenin' everyone!  I'm gonna make this short and sweet because I'm tired. (Haven't slept good in the past couple of nights)  I first wanted to THANK everyone that has followed me and anyone who has recommended me.  I'm hoping that I have joined all your blogs as well but I'm getting a little lost on who's who.  (sorry!)

I also wanted to point out that I've changed my name on here to Lolli.  I was looking at other blogs that have online persona's and I think it's kinda neat!  Plus, I'm getting a lot (I guess some would be a more appropriate word) of traffic to my blog from www.lapbandtalk.com and I'm Lolli(catt) there so I thought it'd be easier to streamline the two social networks.  So there, I am Lolli.  I'm not embarrassed, or hiding my identity, I'm still me, Ashley.  I just like the idea of being Lolli...here.  You get me? (Is this totally corny?)

So, next protein shake recipe.  I'm almost 24 hours from surgery by the way...YAY!  So this may be my last post for a couple of days, but we'll see.  The drink I made for me this morning I call my Mochaccino...and it's delish!  I've been missin' my morning coffee because it's been a little weird going to an ice cold shake first thing in the mornin' and then switchin' to hot steamy coffee right after so I thought I'd comprimise...and it's GOOD!

(Hazelnut) Mochaccinno Protein Shake

6-8 Ice cubes
1 scoop of Body Fortress Chocolate Protein Shake
1/2 cup of Soymilk (original)
1 packet of Nescafe Taster's Choice Instant Coffee (any flavor is good, I'm using Hazelnut right now)

Add all to my Ninja blender and Voila'!

Green Tea Frap anyone?

Good morning peeps.  Day 10 here on the Pre-op (mostly) liquid diet and 4 days away from surgery.  YAAAAAAAY!  I'm not really nervous.  Is that normal?  I guess havin' about 7 months to mentally prepare for this life changing procedure has been a life saver to my sanity.  I couldn't imagine goin' through this 1 month after my seminar.  I probably wouldn't have lasted 4 days on pre-op and maybe even decided that I could've done this on my own...again.  And we all know how that has turned out in the past...

(LOL!)

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm happy that I was required to do 6 months with a doc because I feel that I am 110% ready for this.

Anyway, about a year ago, I was introduced to Starbucks' Green Tea Frappuccino, and I.WAS.HOOKED.  For those of you that aren't familiar its a sweet, creamy Green Tea, drink of frozen goodnes.  And coming in at a whopping 440 calories for the Grande size...eeeekk!!  Really?!?!  I was having a few a week!!!  Just goes to show you how important it is to count calories, I would've never guessed that this thing was close to half of the calories I should have been eating/drinking per day.  Here are the Nutritional Facts for Starbucks Green Tea Frappuccino:

Cheers to me...

So I've been messing around with my blog, trying to design it and make it all cute and stuff, when I realized that I have never introduced myself...or my journey.  So here goes it...I'm Lolli, and I'm a southern girl deep in the heart of Texas.  I have a twang and you'll see my southern pride by droppin' the G in 'ing' (see!) throughout this blog.  I'm 29 years old, and I've been married for almost 2 years.  I haven't always been heavy.  Growing up, I was very active in dance, in shape, and was pretty good at eatin' good.  About 10 years ago, I graduated high school, stopped dance, went to college, met my husband, and have been battling my weight ever since.  I've lost weight...ALOT of it, but every time it comes back, I pack on more...and more...and more.  So much more where I've forgotten what it's like to feel good, feel pretty, and to love myself.  I find myself hidin' most of the time.  We never go out, not because the hubby wont take me, but because I don't want to be seen.  I don't dress myself well because fat girl clothes just aren't cute!

I've been researching the Lap-Band procedure for about 1 1/2 years before I was 100% sure it's what I wanted to do.  I had called many times, set many appointments, but never showed up.  This past March (right after my birthday) I had an appointment at 10am...mind you this was about my 2,430,924,098th appointment I'd made... and I was doin' what I do best at about 9:15am, watchin' TV.  I almost didn't go.   I remember almost not goin'.  But I did; and boy I am glad that I did!  I went to my seminar, and I found out that my insurance would most likely approve it!  They gave me a break down of all my requirements and that I would have to have Dr.s visits for 6 months, medical exams, nutritional visits, psych evals, etc., and in Sept. 2011, I would be able to submit everything to insurance, pray for an approval, and have surgery in October.  All went according to plan!!  I have my surgery scheduled on October 27, which is like 5 days away...and I am ready!  I've been on Pre-op liquids for 9 days, hence my last post and all is going well.  So that's it for me, for now.  :)

Berries make everything better!

Hello...is there anyone out there?  Well anyway, it's Ashley again (Everyone: Hi Ashley!).  I have been on the pre-op diet for 8 days now and must I say that it it's not so bad.  Now, that's not to say that I don't have episodes...Last night I saw a commercial for Olive Garden's new cheesy-stuffed-tortellini-heaven-on-a-plate and I think I just about turned dog...ya know, lickin' my chops and slobberin' all over? But all in all, its been pretty manageable.  My hardest time is the duration between lunch and dinner but oh that's makes my 4oz or protein and 1 cup of veggies that much better!

So the doc has me on two protein shakes a day and one meal for dinner which consists of 4oz of lean protein and one cup of veggies....NO Carrots and NO Bananas (bummer because I live for bananas).  So lets talk about the protein shakes and I'll leave the post about dinner for another day.  I love my protein shakes!  Werid huh?  Not the pre-made ones, those make me want to starve myself, seriously.  I can't tell you what kind of taste they leave in my mouth but they are NASTY.  But MY protein shakes are the bomb diggity!   I only get the Body Fortress  from Walmart or Kroger and they are about $15 for a 2lb tub (Per scoop= 140cal/1g sugar/26g protein/4 carbs).  Sounds like a score to me!

Now lets get to the good stuff.  This morning I had my Berries Galore protein shake for breakfast that definitely is just delicious!  Please keep in mind that I am making this according to my doc's rules during pre-op, and I am allowed to have berries.

Berries Galore

6-8 ice cubes
1/2 cup of Soy Milk (Original)
1 scoop of Body Fortress Strawberry Protein powder
1/2 cup of Berry Medley (Great Value, from Walmart, no sugar added)

Add all to my Ninja Blender and Voila'!

I plugged this into Myfitnesspal.com and here are the Nutrition Facts:

Total Carbs (g)   17
Protein (g)           30
Sugars (g)            10

If anyone knows of a program where I can get nutrition labels, or how to get them from Myfitnesspal.com then please let me know.

Hope everyone has a good day!  :)
